If you enjoy watching birds around your bird feeder, you won’t be surprised when I tell you that the Blue Jay, with its loud, jeering call and bully attitude, is a member of the same family of birds as crows and ravens. What may surprise you to learn, however, is that those “blue” feathers aren’t blue at all. They’re actually black, and the blue hue you see is one of nature’s tricks created by an effect called light scattering.
I have two variations on my blue jay ornament (again, I couldn’t decide between backgrounds!), this particular one being a cross hatch pattern, a nod to my love of all things mid-century modern. Each wool applique blue jay ornament is drawn out, carefully cut, and handstitched by yours truly. The oval portion of the ornament measures approximately 2.75″ tall by 2″ wide. Of course because of the handmade nature of this item, minor variations may exist from one ornament to another.
