Going back to my earliest memories, I’ve always been a maker and entrepreneur. From selling toilet paper roll “binoculars” in my driveway and creating my own line of “Homemark” greeting cards as a child to helping establish and promote a popular modern woodturning art business in recent years, I love all aspects of the creative process.
When it comes to sewing, the skill and I got off to a rocky start. In 7th grade Home Ec class, I developed a love-hate relationship with the sewing machine that lasted several decades. It wasn’t pretty! What I discovered from that experience, however, was that I LOVE handwork – embroidery, crewel, applique, knitting, crochet, you name it. There’s something very engrossing, almost meditative, about working with your hands. As a bonus, the projects are very portable. Just about anywhere I go, from the waiting room at a doctor’s office to the local coffee shop, you’ll find me stitching.
I started making these wool applique ornaments to sell at art fairs alongside the wood pieces. They were fun and provided a little pop of color amongst the natural wood grains. They also ended up being far more popular than I ever expected! What began as a bit of an afterthought took on a life of its own, and here we are.
I hope my handstitched wool ornaments bring you as much joy as they do me. 🙂
